GPS devices are among the best selling technology products, and its easy to pay a lot of money for a unit only to be disappointed. Not all GPS units are created equally, and not all are priced according to the value given. Shop carefully for the best price.

Before You Buy
The prices of GPS devices vary widely from around 100 to upwards of 600. Forget any GPS over 150. A very good GPS with all of the necessary user features can be bought for about 130. This model does not come with the automatic map update feature. However, this feature and a few more can be purchased in a model that sells for around 150.

Its important to decide whether the GPS will be used primarily in the car, or whether it will be used for hiking and camping. GPS units will not serve both purposes.

GPS models for serious hikers and campers require a high-sensitivity receiver, detailed base map, a barometric altimeter, and an electronic compass. These models sell for about 250.
